Toen de Uitgever van Mannen van Sta-vast mij uitnoodigde weer een
geschiedkundig verhaal voor u te schrijven, meende ik eerst u het leven
van onzen grootsten zeeheld M. A. DE RUYTER te schetsen. Reeds had
ik hiertoe eenige bouwstoffen verzameld, toen 'k Mr. J. VAN LENNEPS
Beroemde Nederlanders in handen kreeg.--Deze geleerde schrijver
wijdt in dat werk ook eenige bladzijden aan den vlootvoogd MARTEN
HARPERTSZ. TROMP en zegt o. a. van hem: ... "en nog heden wordt TROMP
niet geschat op die hoogte waarop hij werkelijk behoort geplaatst
te worden."
En dit is nu het oordeel van een Nederlander, wiens hart warm klopte
voor de geschiedenis van zijn Vaderland; maar zelfs de Engelsche
schrijvers vereeren Tromp, en zijne beeltenis hangt in de galerij
te Greenwich.
Mijn besluit was genomen; ik zou onzen DE RUYTER niet schetsen, maar
het leven van M. H. TROMP met u behande
